Believe it or not Elton John was in Pullman, Washington WSU for Mom's Weekend, April 12, 2008. Getting the tickets in advance was a huge challenge. I waited online for at least two hours, simply to find out they were sold out in a matter of minutes. A friend of mine who also was going for Mom's Weekend, did get tickets and as luck would have it, the ticket company double charged her and sent her two sets of tickets. I guess my going was something that was meant to be. I flew over to Spokane, rented my car, and traveled to the lovely town of Pullman home of the cougars.
I spent my high school years listening to Elton John; he was bigger than life. As a naive kid growing up in Puyallup, Washington in the 70's, the lyrics puzzled me then. I bought the album, listened to it at least 500 times and memorized every word. I find out today, people banter on discussion groups as to the exact meaning of his songs and many others...I'm sure if my mom would have really known what growing up in the 70's was really like, ALL music, except perhaps Herb Albert, although the girl on the front album cover was completely covered in whipped cream...Hmmmm, and Perry Como would have been banned. The wake-up call to our parents should have been when Tom Jones first made his appearance on a regular week night, shaking and shimming his way to the bank with screaming housewives in the audience. All in all, I think my mom, like all other parents, the world was going to hell in a handbasket during the 70's, but also kind of liked the attitudes of young people who dressed to make a statement in hiphugger bellbottoms, platform shoes and who marched to end the war in Vietnam.
