Snow Day

I awoke at 3:45 am this morning to peek out my window. I must have sensed a change because when I peered out, the ground had a light dusting and the sky surrounding Puyallup was brightening in the overhead streetlights. I waited until 5:30 am to hear school had been cancelled by my husband who was driving and finally at 6:15 am, I received my personal phone call from school district recording confirming my unscheduled vacation day. That's why I chose Dilbert's cartoon for 1/28/08 for today's heading. It is tough to make a decision when there are so many people to consult. The thing is, by the time the decision reaches the workers, it sometimes is too late. I used to live in Eatonville and commute to Puyallup everyday. It is a 45 minute drive on a good day. On a bad day it can be 60 minutes or more. A few times I drove to work and found out school was cancelled on the way. I am thankful my husband bought a house next door to the school where I work. Still better, I'm thankful my commute is two minutes in either bad traffic or bad weather. Today I've also included a picture of our near empty birdfeeder. The birds must have known it was coming; animals all sense weather events and changes that come unexpectedly. They make decisions based on what makes sense and through patterns stamped clearly in the genes of experience and survival. The flakes are big now...and falling at a steady rate. I'll keep you posted as to the total amount, but right now I am watching. It is odd how we are all drawn to the simplicity of a snowflake and how its combined strength can change all that is around us. For humans the easiest of decisions become complex; as for wild animals, good decisions are what makes sense for survival.
